CARL RANDALL is a British figurative painter whose work is based on images of modern Japan and London. A graduate of The Slade School of Fine Art, The Royal Drawing School London, and Tokyo University of Arts Japan, he is the winner of the BP Travel Award at The National Portrait Gallery, The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, The Nomura Art Prize Japan, as well as several other awards. He has had several solo exhibitions in London and Japan, with group exhibitions at The National Portrait Gallery, The Royal Academy of Arts, The Jerwood Gallery, Flowers Gallery, The Mall Galleries, Christies New York & London, Tokyo Art Award, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Arts; as well as at art fairs in Switzerland, Turkey, Japan and Taiwan. His work can be found in the collections of University College London Art Museum, Tokyo Geidai Art Museum Japan, The Royal Collection (being commissioned by HRH Prince of Wales/King Charles), Foundation Carmignac Paris (joining works in their collection by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gerhard Richter), as well as in private collections in the UK, Japan, Australia and USA. His paintings have been featured on the BBC World Service and CNN, and his fine art prints are in the collection of the National Poetry Library, London Zoo, Cambridge University and Channel 4 News Studios. He was invited to be artist in residence in Hiroshima City to paint portraits of survivors of the Atomic Bomb, and at the Grand Prix Formula 1 Races in Japan. His BP Travel Award display of sixteen Japan paintings at the National Portrait Gallery in 2013 was accompanied by 'Japan Portraits' - a catalogue illustrating paintings and drawings made during his stay in Tokyo. The exhibition then travelled to Aberdeen Art Gallery Scotland; Wolverhampton Art Gallery England; and The Tokaido Hiroshige Museum, Shizuoka Japan. He is based in London.
JAPAN PORTRAITS are a series of paintings made whilst living in Japan for 10 years (2003-2013). In these paintings, Carl created images of everyday life in contemporary Japan - Japanese culture and society as seen through the eyes of a visiting foreign artist. A series of large black and white canvases show densely packed groups of faces inspired by the crowds of Tokyo - a response to urban issues such as overpopulation, isolation and urban alienation. These crowd pantings are documents of Tokyo, made in collaboration with over one thousand residents of the city, each visiting his studio to sit for their portraits. Other works combine people and places - narrative compositions portraying everyday scenes of urban and rural Japanese landscapes. Some were commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery in London after winning the BP Travel Award - his proposal being to document the people and places of contemporary Japan along the 'Tokaido Highway' (a route running from Tokyo to Kyoto, as depicted in the woodblock prints of Japanese ukiyo-e artist Ando Hiroshige). ‘Japan Sketchbook’ shows initial ideas for paintings, observational line drawings made on Tokyo trains, and portrait drawings made from life (including of survivors of the atomic bomb, made whilst artist in residence in Hiroshima). A small selection of the paintings were made after his return to the UK, based on memories of Japan (some private commissions).
LONDON PORTRAITS were started upon his return to the UK, after a decade spent in Japan. These paintings depict the people and places of contemporary London - crowded city centre areas such as Piccadilly Circus, Waterloo Bridge, Thames River, Primrose Hill, the Chelsea Flower Show, and the East End. He also created portraits of 15 people who have contributed to their fields in British arts, society and culture, with each sitter being asked to choose a location in London for the background of their portraits. Participants include: actress Julie Walters, comedian Jo Brand, director Nick Park, author/illustrator Raymond Briggs, poet Simon Armitage, newscaster Jon Snow, novelist David Mitchell, actress Katie Leung, graphic novelist/illustrator Dave McKean, poet Benjamin Zephaniah, movie producer Jeremy Thomas, film-maker Julien Temple, dancer Akram Khan, zoologist Desmond Morris, actor Sir Antony Sher and theatre director Gregory Doran. The series also includes a number of privately commissioned portrait paintings, with clients choosing their own London backdrops (including recent works commissioned by Bob Bob Ricard London for their new £25 million restaurant in the City of London).
EARLY WORK predominantly features architectural work made at The Slade School of Fine Art - scenes of isolation, mystery and disquiet depicted in London nightscapes; lit windows glimpsed from the outside, suggesting private hidden interiors. He also produced three-dimensional architectural mixed media relief paintings that mediate between sculpture and painting - some constructed to give the illusion of distance in a shallow space, whilst others play with traditional perspective. His early interest in portraiture can be seen in pencil and ink drawings made directly from life; of friends, family, himself, and of elderly people made in retirement homes.
